"Municipality of Oak Bay Celebrates its Hockey Heritage"

The Victoria Arena stood at the corner of Epworth Street and Cadboro Bay Road across the street from Oak Bay High School, Opened Christmas Day 1911. Built by the Patrick Family, this facility was the world's first indoor artificial ice hockey arena and the scene of the worlds first proffessional league game on artificial ice, January 2 1912.

In March of 1925 the Western Canada Hockey Leaugue Champion Victoria Cougars hosted a best of five playoff against the Montreal Canadiens for the rights to the Stanley Cup. The first two games were won handily by the Cougars, with Frank Fredrickson shadowing the great Howie Morenz and holding him pointless. Facing elimination Les Habitants battled back to win game three. Morenz pocketing a hat trick in that game. Deep in talent and very well coached by Lester Patrick, Victoria went on to win game four and capture the Stanley Cup in front of fourty-two hundred delirious fans.

The Cougars were sold in 1926 to become the Detroit Cougars and eventually the Detroit Red Wings.

The arena was destroyed by fire on rememberance day 1929.
